Early Pregnancy Clinic

Usually held by appointment in Porirua.

An early pregnancy clinic appointment with me is suitable for a woman up to 16 weeks pregnant who has not yet booked with a midwife, so that she can still access care and information available, some of which is time bound. As I am a midwife this is a free service.

This early appointment can provide you with:

  • pregnancy confirmation,

  • information on maternity care options,

  • health and nutrition advice,

  • pregnancy information brochures and packs,

  • screening including antenatal blood tests, dating scan, and/or trisomy disorder screening,

  • prescriptions for recommended supplements and/or anti-emetics for pregnancy sickness.

All results will be available to your midwife once you have booked one.

What if you still can't find a midwife?

During your search to book with a midwife, you will continue to have access to me for any concerns up until 16 weeks. If you are unable to book with your own LMC midwife by this point, I will offer to refer you to one who is available or offer the option of hospital community midwifery team for ongoing care. I will ensure you have pregnancy care established if you choose to attend my early pregnancy clinic - you will not be left without care a option after 16 weeks.

If you do book with the hospital community midwifery team for your ongoing care, you may like to consider returning to me for your postnatal care after the baby is born if you live within the Porirua- Paekākāriki area.

Early pregnancy appointments are most suitable to women between 6-16 weeks, however I will usually be able to see anyone who has been unable to find a midwife at any gestation, by arrangement.

Things to know...
From 6 weeks gestation, a heartbeat can be detected via ultrasound scan.

By 12 weeks gestation all organs and body structures are developing. It is possible to hear the baby's heartrate abdominally with a foetal Doppler at your check-ups.

Between 6-16 weeks an appointment will include a health check and the offer of screenings as available to all pregnant women.
