Food safety during pregnancy is a major health initiative for the safety of women and babies in utero. Some foodborne bacteria (ecoli, listeria) can cause illness such as vomiting and diarrhoea, but as women will invariably recover, usually with rest and hydration, greater concern is for the wellbeing of the unborn baby. Foodborne bacterial infection has been linked to premature labour and newborn infection. These two events together pose risk to the newborn. While the attached link is not based in New Zealand, and outlines recalls in the UK, it is a reminder to be vigilant of how trustworthy prepared salads for sale may be. Fresh and washed is the way to go.
